Throbbing Noise

2021
5’00”

Throbbing Sonic

2021
10’00”

Throbbing Light

2021

▚ Throbbing: The Inescapable Uncertainty ▚

The art works are like a medium to direct us into the spirituality,
which is like a constant flow of consciousness,
going through the inner and exterior space of the audiences’ bodies,
washing out the purest part in the consciousness.
The audiences get to experience a primal spiritual state of the self,
so as to activate, and to inspire other unique experiences.
–Fujui Wang

The condition for a “sound” to take place is for it to be perceived by a “body”. That which is at play includes the audio sensory system, and therefore the sense of balance of the inner ears and the spatial orientation that come with it. Without doubt, digital technology continues to challenge the sensory orientation that our bodies are used to. The correlation between sounds and images had become illogical and illusory from the outset of filmmaking. With the three works in the Throbbing: Modulating Fujui Wang exhibition, the artists provoke sense and perception by means of virtual reality technology: The provocation occurs when the body enters a virtual reality without seeing its own flesh, but left with invisible sound sources dashing around; when the movements of the body randomly trigger the emergence of sounds and images, rendering it impossible to ground the sense of direction on hearing; when the sound sources are made visible in a VR headset but remain bewilderingly “virtual” as they say invisible to bare eyes in physical reality. Furthermore, when the image is rendered vast and approaching, causing a sense of divergence to arise on the basis of an exposure to the “extra-ordinary”, the experience reminds the shock and the kinetic impulses that often accompany watching a massive projection in a cinema – where so much would feel unpredictable, and inescapable.

Based on Throbbing Sonic (2020), exhibited in Good Vibration! 2020 Festival organized by C-LAB, Fujui Wang presents three brand new productions in Throbbing: Modulating Fujui Wang, including Throbbing Sonic (2021), Throbbing Noise (2021), and Throbbing Light (2021). The works are all sampled from Wang’s signature elements, such as video glitch and sound dot drivers. Fujui Wang, C-LAB Taiwan Contemporary Cultural Lab, and ET@T develop together an audio-visual techno-art exhibition with an innovative concept that still proclaims real time sensory experience— to “modulate” Fujui Wang.

Throbbing Noise
2021
5’00”
Single Channel Video

Throbbing Noise is like the complex reflection and shadows on the surface tissue of cortical folding; keeps mutating and flickering, along with the neuron electrical charge releasing electricity, slowly developing between radiation and compression. By mildly stimulating visual and auditory senses, we get to gradually explore the inner space of sensory nerves, and to activate the neurons in our brains. The fluid sparkles, and the hovering audio frequency respond to the sensory activity in the brain, leading us into the immersive fluid experience of consciousness.

Throbbing Sonic
2021
10’00”
16.2 Ambisonic System, VR Headset

The creation of Throbbing Sonic comes from the hybrid modulation of sounds correlated with the process of image formation. Through the constant interaction between sound and vision, the sensory nervous system is stimulated. The inter-uncertainty between human influence, media, and machine arithmetic plays a part. C-LAB Taiwan Sound Lab utilizes the 3D sound mixing function in Spat stereoscopic system, together with a complete stereophony library, to control the source of sounds in physical space corresponding to the virtual 3D environment. It creates improvised information offset in video glitch. The images perform in the states of instant movement, generation, formation, transformation and decomposition, rendering unpredictability and uncertainty.

The sound matrix applied in the exhibition is made with 16.2 speakers. Its object-oriented design allows the objects in the virtual reality environment to reflect different acoustic pressure and sound frequency according to the corresponding distance and direction in the physical world. Every audience member will receive a unique visual and audio experience depending on the level of participation in the exhibition, gaining different feedbacks.

Throbbing Light
2021
5’00”; Installation Dimension Variable
Customized Electronic Devices, Small speakers, IR Led, Acrylic Sphere, Oculus Quest Headset, 4-channel Monitor Speaker

The giant light sphere in Throbbing Light is constructed out of hundreds of “sound dots” drivers. Every sound dot generates noises in different frequency through random number arithmetic, and at the same time, the electricity of the sound frequencies drive the unseen infrared light. By utilizing the visualization function of Oculus VR headset, Throbbing Light transforms the commonly known virtual reality experience into a “sound-vision” artwork that is highly interrelated with physical reality. We can see the infrared light, which is invisible to naked eyes, through VR headset and witness its existence. The audiences’ movements affect the sound depth in the virtual world in real time.
